Human Universal 5: Maintaing a diurnal cycle

Brown’s “diurnality” universal describes the pattern of daytime activity and nighttime rest. Our affordance “Maintaining a diurnal cycle” captures both “waking up to engage in daytime activities” and “sleeping at night.” Included in CAA’s debut, it highlights how societies worldwide use objects, from alarms and windows to beds and mats, to organize their daily rhythm.
